I'm Breaking Up with Sunflower Butter

I have a problem with peanut butter. The problem is I eat too much of it. I know peanut butter is good for you, but not in the mass quantities I eat it in. I can add peanut butter to anything – bananas, oatmeal, toast, sandwiches, bagels, waffles, Saltine crackers, brownies, pretzels, on top of other scoops of peanut butter, in dirty socks, on shards of glass.

You get the idea.

Anyway, I recognized the problem and identified the solution: don’t buy peanut butter. Duh. Well, that won’t happen. There are two of us in the house that eat peanut butter, so it’s not fair to the hubs if he wants it.

I went with the second most sensible option: find a peanut butter substitute that I don’t like as well so I won’t overeat. Enter sunflower butter.

Well, I’m finding out this was a bad idea. I like sunflower butter better than peanut butter. A lot better. Bought this one a couple days ago.

I don’t even need something to put sunflower butter on. My finger works. Or my upper lip. You know, for later.

God, please don't let some perv find this online and say it's poop.

Oh, and I took that picture while in a tele-conference at work. Don’t say I never did anything for you.

So now I need to stop buying sunflower butter.

 It’s getting ridiculous.

Sunflower butter, I’m breaking up with you.

What food do you need to keep out of the house?

OMG, there’s a cheese/seafood dip you can buy at Publix. It’s back where the other seafood stuff is. That stuff is so deadly around here. It is awesome on Club crackers. Sux because we’re out right now and now just thinking about makes me want some!!

  2. I’ve never tried sunflower butter, but now I really want some! Or maybe I shouldn’t have it? I’d probably eat it in no time flat too.

I used to have a problem with PB being a huge trigger food for me, so for a few years I never had it on hand. Then, for some odd reason, that trigger went away! Yay! So, now I keep it on hand again and only use it sparingly. I can NOT have any sort of packaged cookie or candy on hand (oreos, reeses, Peeps, etc etc) because once I start I will not stop!

  3. Almond Butter. When I first bought it I thought “oh, it’s OK, but not as good as peanut butter”. Then I realized that it was gone a week later because I ate it on everything and planned meals around it. I haven’t bought it since, but I do look longingly at it in the grocery store when I go. These damn nut butters need to be less fattening so that I can eat it in mass quantities!

  4. I also am a big fan of sunflower butter, that stuff is the shiz!! I have to say I need to break up with almond butter because it’s getting out of hand…..I don’t think it’s gonna happen though!!

Paula you straight up put that Sunbutter on your upper lip and left it there for a picture. HAHAAHA. I’m coming to visit you.

  6. So funny. I had a sunflower butter and jelly sandwich for lunch and I think I may have licked the Ziploc bag just a bit to get all of that goodness out of it. I’m with you — that stuff is liquid crack (if crack actually made you fat instead of skinny and missing teeth). I got so angry once that I accidentally bought a jar of sunflower butter with no seeds that I went back to the store to buy a bag of shelled sunflowers and then added them to the jar. That, my friend, is issues.

But you know what’s even more dangerous? Those Peanut Butter and Co. pb. The one with crunchy honey? Oh my Lord. I housed a jar of that in one day.

I can’t quit nut butters, no matter how much I try, but I do find that I tend to eat straight almond butter less than the other nut butters. Perhaps that can be your next substitute.

    • I love that cinnamon and raisin one from Peanut Butter and Co. I’m afraid to try the White Chocolate one! I try to put off things I know I will like for as long as possible. I’m pretty sure I could have waited a few more years before I knew the glory of Nutella too. 🙂

  7. Thank you for those pictures, I am genuinely grateful for the laughs they induced. I can’t keep ice cream in the house. I will legit eat an entire half gallon of Breyers in maaaybe 3 days, if we’re being conservative.

  8. Nutella is pretty yummy , so are soft batch cookies and those great new brownie bites in the refrigerator section…yum!

  9. Bricks of cheddar cheese. It’s really bad. I can go through a large one myself in a matter of a few days. I really need to find a cheese eaters anonymous meeting.

  10. Aside from ice cream, Kerrygold cheese of all kinds! @Michelle, when you find a CEA meeting, let me know. I may need to declare my issue before I go broke. =X

  11. Mz. Teri

Cheese… anything from sharp cheddar to blue cheese to gouda to brie. I’ll eat it all, and in just about any form too. Don’t judge… I AM from Wisconsin, afterall! 😉

I have a jar of PB in my work drawer. I had some earlier, should probably not have any more OR a mini PB cup when I get home (totally going to happen). I tried almond butter and HATED it – so maybe that’s what you should try? Not inedible, but unappetizing for me. I threw that one out. The pb, however, stays with me.

    • I have PB in my work drawer too! But it hasn’t gotten any action since I’ve been bringing the sunflower butter with me to work. I think I might need to try almond butter now. Maybe that will slow me down finally!

  13. I CANNOT keep cereal in my house. Just knowing its there is like my own personal challenge to see how fast I can eat it.

  14. I saw your comment on Beneath it All and thought I’d say hi because I’m from Orlando too! Good luck with the sunflower butter addiction!

  15. i can put pb on anything too. but the thing that i could just eat and eat and eat are a particular kind of banana granola bar. YUM. breakfast, lunch AND dinner right there hahha

At least you didn’t include “Dirty” or “Sanchez” anywhere in your post. So I think your safe from the poop weirdos. 🙂

I have this same problem, only it’s with Almond Butter. I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, and I can see the bottom of the bottle already. I lose.

  17. I used to eat peanut butter straight from the jar but seemed to have curbed that habit. I tried almond butter and didn’t like it nearly as much as peanut so maybe you could try that? Of course, the almond stuff was “natural” and the peanut butter I use has a pound of sugar added so that may have been the issue.

  18. Your pictures from work conference calls always make me laugh. This is exactly why I can’t by Nutella. And Peanut Butter and I had to take some time apart a few years back, but we’ve managed to work things out since. I actually don’t like Almond Butter even though everyone else loves it. Maybe buy a brand or style of PB that you don’t like – like get the crunchy if you prefer creamy?

  19. I think we all have foods like that! I used to eat an entire jumbo jar of PB every week in college. Now I am able to eat it with something else and not off the spoon but it took a while!

For me having cookies, brownies, or cake in the house is a big no no. I only buy cupcakes or cookies one at a time. Works like a charm 🙂

  20. I CAN NOT have chips in the house. I will eat the whole bag. And lick the inside.

  21. Aarika

I have a strange obsession with kettle corn from whole foods. I don’t know why, but this will NOT last in the house more than a day or two even though there are generally 10 servings/bag. Doesn’t do much for the hail damage!

  22. I don’t keep sharp cheddar cheese in the house. I’m highly lactose intolerant but grew up eating good cheese like that so I can’t stop even if my stomach hurts.

BTW your pictures are hilarious. Fun way to make conference calls more bearable.

Sun Butter is ridiculous. Have you tried Sunflower Seed Butter from Trader Joe’s–Holy Hannah–that will really ruin your life. Since you love it so much, I figured I share my simple sunbutter snack recipe…http://www.healthgirltv.com/2011/06/oh-glorious-day-yummy-snack.html
    happy eating!

  25. I DID THE SAME THING!!!!! I loved peanut butter so I was like let me find something else to eat….Sunflowerseed butter! NOW I AM ADDICTED TO SUNFLOWERSEED BUTTER!! Btw it is MUCH butter than peanut butter.

  26. Damn you. Now I have new ideas for how to use peanut butter – specifically: pretzels and brownies. Oh, this is not good.

The list of food that I can’t bring into our house is lengthy. Let me give it a shot:
    -Baked goods
    -Pretzels, chips, crackers
    -Trail mix
    -Ice cream
    -Pirates Booty
    -Chocolate milk
    -Pepper jack or gouda cheese

Yeah, basically we only have vegetables & meat in our house. 🙂

  27. 100% peanut butter and tubs of ice cream. I have no self control and it’s horrible!

  28. Oh boy, your post made me want to go buy Sunflower Butter. I’m addicted to Peanut & Almond Butter, I have a feeling I would love Sunflower Butter. On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t buy it…heaven knows I have more than enough nut butters in my life! Ha!

  29. Heather McWhorter

What food do I need to keep out of the house? Hmmm… all of it! I’m addicted to it all! (Except peppers, tomatoes and cilantro.)

  30. Heather McWhorter

One more thing… you should never, EVER dip Simply Lite Dark Chocolate from Trader Joe’s in the Sunbutter. It’s delicious.

  31. I’ve heard of a lot of people having this problem with nut butters! Mine’s chocolate covered banana chips ( I get them at Fresh Market.) I can’t keep them in the house!

I have a major problem with peanut butter too! The solution I’ve found is to get natural peanut butter that only has peanuts and salt in it… It’d be better not to eat it but… In sure you understand

  39. Kate

This is 100% me. I hate to get rid of it because it is the most “processed” item I eat. I even found a Sprouts brand that is unsalted/unsweetened which I love. But again, I love it too much. My eating habits are all plant-based so even though I have trouble with portion sizes, I keep it as my “fun” snack and make sure to eat a lot of veggies and other fruits too!
