The Day I Was Glad I Have a Big Butt

Saturday morning started out with a 3:45am wake-up call to meet my group for my first ever 16 mile run. Distance PR in the house! Can I get a Phoebe run?

Garmin stats: 16.02 miles (3 hours)

That time includes all the walk breaks (7:1), all the water stops except one, and the 5 minutes I got completely lost from the group. (Not kidding. A freaking group of 15 runners and I lost them all.)

August 2010 called and wants that joke back.

For this one, I decided to try something different: no sugar. For breakfast I had 1/2 cup plain overnight oats (with cinnamon and 1 packet of Splenda) and a PRP. God bless the PRP.

During the run, I avoided Gatorade at the water stops and ate mini-pretzels as fuel. At Mile 7, I took one Thermotab. I had no tummy issues so maybe the no sugar thing worked? I’ll find out for sure when I try it again on our 18 miler in a few weeks.

During this run, the girls from Lululemon were at one of our main water stops handing out water so we could get through faster and simulate racing a little more closely. They were also giving out FREE running shorts if (and only if) you changed your shorts right there and finished your run in them.

There were only two sizes left when we got there: size 4 and size T-Rex. I don’t think I’ve ever been more happy that I have the largest ass in Marathonfest.

Sweet baby unicorn whispers, those are the most comfortable shorts I’ve ever worn. And the only shorts I have ever worn that do not ride up in the middle. Totally worth the $58 dollars I did not pay.

Overall, this was a really good run and very challenging. I’m wondering if my new group is a little on the fast side for me. I struggled a bit to keep up. I’m trying to decide if I should do the shorter runs (10-12 miles) with my new group and do the longer ones with my (slower) old group. I can’t decide. Sad smile I really like the new group but it’s really hard for me to keep a good pace in the humidity. I feel like I’m breathing water out there.

What’s something I can eat during my runs with NO sugar that isn’t as dry and salty as pretzels? (I had to eat those things with a mouth full of water. Blech.)

  1. Way to go on your 16 miler! As for the salty snacks for running, I’m not too sure…but I have been known to crush some salty chips on a bike ride. Why the no sugar?
I kinda hate you for getting freeeee lululemon. I seriously give them half of my paycheck, do every run in their shorts, and will drive an hour and a half in my gas sucking car to go to their damn store and I havent gotten jack shit for free. Jealousssss!!!
But I love you for putting a picture of Antoine Dodson up! hahaha!

    • I think sugar causes me to have big stomach problems during my runs. This is the first run I tried with no sugary stuff and the first one where I didn’t get sick during or right after the run in a long time. I’m hoping I found my answer to no pooping!

  2. as soon as I read the title of this, I started laughing. who can fit in size 4 lululemons anyway? certainly not me.

I know we broke up towards the end, but I had no idea you got separated. dude, I’m so sorry! 😦

The first time I ran 16 miles, I needed bathroom breaks approximately every 1/2 mile. One girl ended up sticking with me for the run and my runs…….misery loves company.

  3. Congrats on the PDR! and free Lululemon shorts? Jealousss.

I’m honestly at a loss for sugar-free fuel… what about a PB & SF jelly sandwich cut up into squares?

    • I did try that for one of my half marathons and it worked out well. But I had to eat it with water too. It was really hard to get down so I only ended up eating less than half of the sandwich. I could try again though. Couldn’t be worse than pretzels…

An untested idea: Maybe make rice and form it into sushi-like cakes that would be easy to carry in your Batman belt . . . thinking if you roll it tight in foil and refrigerate it overnight, it might keep its shape when you cut it into chunks. If it was plain (or cooked with veggie broth or something) it wouldn’t be affected by the heat, and the broth will give you a little salt.

  5. I have no advice for you. I almost died during my TWO miler yesterday. GOOD JOB!

  6. I’ve eaten animal crackers too, which worked out good for me and I have a sensitive stomach too. They’re sweet-ish but I feel like they’re not bad on the stomach. Or try and find unsalted pretzels?

    Nice job on the run!

  7. Melissa

do you know what they’re called?

  8. Woot woot on the run! We might have run around the same pace this week. I think that pace is GOOD for you – it’s OK that it’s a little fast, it helps push you. The humidity totally sucks — I think there was less on Sunday because of the ran that came through late in the evenining.

Still jealous of your free shorts 😦 PLUS we didn’t get any ice pops like we were supposed to. BOOOOOO!

  9. Wow, awesome job with that run! I can only dream of the day I’ll be able to do 16 miles. Sigh…time to get my lazy butt on the treadmill until it decides to cool off around here.

Loving the shorts, but no way I’d pay that much. I always stick to Kohl’s where I know they’ll always be on sale and I’ll almost always have a coupon to use. Yes, I’m cheap. Haha! Free shorts are the way to go!

  10. Woot, woot! <—-that was for your self proclaimed big butt and your new PR for distance! How about some nuts? Almonds, peanuts, cashews? You're probably going to still need to drink water with them…just an idea!

  11. Phoebe run! HOlla! YOu go girl!

  12. Nice job on the run, girl:) Love the Phoebe run 😉
And I have those shorts and they are LOVE. I want MOAR!

  13. What?! Free Lululemon shorts? That’s amazing. Only second to the fact that you ran 16 miles and had no stomach issues. Question though…what the heck time did you start running because 3:45am is a terrible hour to be up at!

  14. Congrats on the 16 miles!!! The thought of that still scares me. And you sure woke up SUPER early – but it is better to run with a group. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve totally lost an entire group before too!

Super awesome deal on the shorts – LOVE Lululemon!

  15. Awesome run! And woohoo for the shorts! I would have stripped butt naked for some… ok maybe not.. but maybe 😉

  16. Jenny Finnegan

Congrats on the 16 miler! That is awesome!
And free shorts on a long run? Where do I sign up for that?! : )
    Great job!

  17. ittybitsofbalance

HAHA you’re hilarious! I wish I had a big butt 😦 I mean, I guess mine is alright– its just average.
    Okay.. enough about my butt…
Congrats on your 16 miler! I’m sure you feel extremely accomplished!

  18. Stefanie

Hmmm, no natural sugars either I suppose? Like something with fruit? Because that would probably help with they dryness. But, then again fruit could make the whole problem worse.

Your running group sounds AWESOME. Free shorts?? I want some of that!

    • I tried those Honey Stingers which are all natural, and those don’t work. I’ve never tried fruit though. It would be awesome if I could eat grapes for 26 miles without getting sick though!

  19. Ginni

Well this may be crossing the line… BUT… If you have running shorts with tights underneath do you still wear underwear? Bc I’m not sure what I would have done in that situation… I would have wanted those shorts so bad but probably not worth my naked hiney hanging out.
Congrats on the 16 miles! Super inspirational!!

  20. 1. I’m stealing the phrase “sweet baby unicorn whispers.” I love it!
    2. Those shorts are sweet!

  21. That’s so cool that you got free lululemon shorts! I wish cool companies came to Michigan to give out free crap, but I’m pretty sure all the hipster athletic companies are scurred of Detroit. Sadface.

As for fuel…saltines? (still dry and salty, though.) (TWSS? Not sure if that worked there.) Maybe a Clif-bar of some sort, although those can still be pretty sweet.

  22. Nice job!! Ahh!! SO SO jealous about the shorts. I love Lulu shorts and they cost a pretty penny. I would definitely drop trou to get a pair. Sucks to be right inbetween two pace groups. I say for a little while perhaps stick with the faster group for shorter runs and the slower group for long runs. But maybe challenge yourself to keep up with the faster group sometimes?

  23. I’ve been looking at their shorts in FOREVER. What are those ones called?

I have no idea what to eat. I have a stomach like a rock, so I just Gu. ): Sorry.

  24. So many things about this post was just awesome.

    1. Phoebe run. YES! That is amazing. I hope you did it the whole 16 miles.
    2. “size 4 and T-Rex” haha definitely laughed out loud on that one.

Congrats on the DPR! 🙂 that is a big jump from 13!

Could you do sugar free jelly beans or something like that?

  25. YOU are a ROCK STAR!!! Way to go on the PDR!!! And free shorts!!! So jealous! Good thing you weren’t wearing the running shorts with the undies built in – that would have been an emabarASSing change!!!! LOL!!!

I’m trying to debate whether or not to join a running group. Part of me wants to, and the other part of me is super nervous to run with a bunch of strangers (I get weirdo shy like that). And I’m terrified that my tummy will act up on me on the trails! I can’t do that in front of a group of strangers… Oy!

  26. Congrats lady! And congrats on shorts fitting and being awesome not riding up in the middle…woop woop! And free! You rock changing right there and then! Booyah! 😉 Yep, I’m late with my response, but I’m still here! 😉
