Bad Habits I Love

I have a lot of bad habits. I didn’t even know my bad habits were that bad until I started reading healthy living blogs and they made me feel bad about them. I think about them a lot. I want to quit a few of them and I’ve tried at various times because it seems like the right thing to do. But it hasn’t happened. So, here I sit chock-full of bad habits and I’m going to share them all with you.

I count calories.

Some call it obsessing over food or disordered eating, but if I didn’t count calories I would weigh more. Period. Days in which I don’t count calories, I eat so much more than I normally would. It’s not that I don’t know I’m eating too much, it’s that I don’t have a number in front of me that tells me how much more I’ve eaten. When I don’t see a number, I don’t “see” the problem, so I keep eating.

I would love to not count calories. I think it sucks logging my food every day but I don’t see a way out of it when I’m terrible with portion control and snacking. There’s no way I will remember I had 3 Twizzlers, 10 gummy bears, a piece of chocolate, and a cookie when I’m about to eat a handful of Skittles. That stuff adds up and if I don’t write it down immediately, I forget.

I am? Ok, before I fall asleep, shove all those Skittles in my mouth.

I drink Diet Coke like it’s going out of style.

Aspartame. I know. It’s not great for you. I quit drinking Diet Coke for a month once and it sucked. Not only that, but it eliminated a couple of my favorite low-calorie alcoholic beverages (diet coke with root beer vodka, anyone?). Why did I leave you for a month, DC?


I think about quitting diet drinks just about every day, right before I crack open a new diet drink. I know eventually I’ll quit, but when it’s always in the house (the hubs drinks it), it’s always an option. So most likely I’ll choose it.

I weigh myself (almost) every day.

Some people think weighing yourself everyday is obsessive and makes you focus too much on a number. For me, it helps me know when I’m getting off track right away. Sure my weight goes up and down during the week. And if it goes up and I know there’s a cause – I had a huge meal for dinner, I drank too much, I went to town on a salt lick – I don’t worry about it. But when the scale is up and I’ve been doing well, I know it’s time to reassess my eating.

The scale is just a part of the bigger picture, which of course also includes diet, exercise, and rest. I’m not saying you should weigh yourself  every day, because some people are ruined by seeing a number. But for me, it works.


I don’t eat organic anything (that I know of).

I don’t try to not eat organic. And I’m definitely not against eating organic. I actually think it’s great and I would love to do it. But I don’t have time to go to the grocery store every week to get fresh food and I don’t have time to cook every day. Organic is expensive and until I get a sugar daddy that can afford me the extra time during the week to quit my job, grocery shop often, and actually find the time to cook, I will be enjoying my Lean Cuisines and Morningstar Sausage patties and probably taking in more sodium than one woman should.


Wow. The jokes are getting weak on this blog.

I love Splenda (and Truvia).

I do. I love it. I can eat it right out of the package. I remember when I was a kid, I used to eat packets of my step-mom’s Equal. That’s transferred right into adulthood unfortunately.  I have reduced the amount of artificial sweeter that I consume, but I still put it in my oatmeal and smoothies. Also, there’s the Diet Coke issue and the Crystal Light issue. Not Splenda, but still artificial sweetener. While I can see removing Splenda from my diet at some point, I don’t see a complete removal of all artificial sweeteners.

I drink.

Let’s face it, this one isn’t going away anytime soon. I only drink once a week, usually.  It’s a definite improvement from only not drinking once a week when I was in my 20’s. Alcohol dehydrates me and makes me feel tired the entire next day, yet I keep doing it. But I guess I’ll just have to deal with it. It’s delicious. And makes me funnier. The end.


What bad habit do you have that you love? (I think the only habit I don’t have is drinking coffee. I’m a mess.)

  2. I can drink an entire pot of coffee all by myself. Meanwhile, my husband can kill an entire 12 pack all by himself. I was the same in my early 20’s. My alcohol tolerance was amazing. It was like marathon training, but it took place at a bar. Short, 2 or 3 drinks during the week, with long binges on the weekend. A great way to build your “base”.

  3. My bad habits include (but are not limited to):
    drinking too much coffee (I am obessed) with LOTS of cream (and not that fat free shit either), doing lots of cardio, BUT hardly any strengh training (I just hate it), and eating out too much (and at unhealthy places ike Q’doba and Culver’s).
    You know what? I feel better getting that off of my chest! 🙂

  4. I don’t have any of those habits. I wouldn’t call all of them bad habits. LOL. You are funny….I think it’s all relative. I don’t count calories, but as I get older, I find I still eat like I’m in my early 20s – which means I don’t eat the right portions for me (and I sometimes overeat just b/c I like whatever I’m eating), might be time. I don’t weigh myself daily, but I think I should start at least looking every couple days. We ate more organic stuff when both of us had paying jobs…lol…rule I have learned is…if it’s got a tough skin (bananas, avocados), there is no need to get organic anyway…but we’d love to eat more organic stuff and more fruits/veggies. And, I do limit my alternative sweeteners…I’ve never liked them…they just taste off to me. I’m not even going to get into the health issues of some of them…some of them taste FUNNY to me. As for the diet coke issue, well it comes back to…OMG now I know why I can’t stand diet soda…it’s the aspartame that I can taste and dislike in every “can”. It’s so distinct and well I just don’t like it….so I do AVOID diet sodas, if there is regular, I’ll pick that every time over a diet.

    As for my bad habits…let’s just say, I think about exercising more than I actually do. Any excuse stops me…yet, I sure think about it a lot. I want to be healthier…but moving in that direction is my biggest bad habit, b/c I still am not. Maybe tomorrow… 😉

  5. I definitely weigh myself every day and I don’t intend on stopping anytime soon. The last time I went a week without weighing myself *ahem two weeks ago* I ended up gaining 5lbs that I’ve been struggling to get off ever since.

    I also keep a food journal so that I can see what I eat, otherwise I will blindly keep eating and gain weight. I REALLY don’t care if people consider either of those “disordered” eating habits or not because the truth is I will not succeed with staying healthy if I don’t do them. I also count out chips and stuff like that to make sure I’m eating the right portion sizes. So sue me.

    Oh and I drink. I drink a glass of wine just about every night and I still go to the bar on the weekend. Does it deter my effort to maintain a lower weight? You bet. But I enjoy it and I enjoy seeing my friends, so that’s not stopping until I find friends that don’t drink. And since I’m not really looking to replace my friends anytime soon….

  6. What habits? I drink too. You are not alone. I loved Diet Pepsi like you love DC, and I quit drinking it 3 months ago or so, and I really don’t miss it. I’ve only had a few sips of it since then and am fine with it……but my glass of iced tea in the AM is so not exciting compared to my Diet Pepsi I used to covet. I WISH I could count calories….I’m good for a few days then get tired of being a slave to it…..that def a good habit!!

    Bad habits…Diet Coke. Diet Coke with liquor in it, Diet Coke with ice cream in it, Diet Coke with frozen cubes of more Diet Coke… I quit it once about a year ago. I got cold sweats, headaches, stomach issues, and I gained weight. So, like a good addict, I just started drinking it again.

    Also, I have a problem with snacking (Have you ever seen The Incredible Hulk movie? “Don’t make me hungry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m hungry.”). And if counting calories is wrong I don’t want to be right. When I don’t track my ass gets 2 sizes bigger ASAP.

  8. Love, love, love this post!!! I drink DC everyday without fail. I’ve thought about quitting, but it’s seriously delicious so why would I? Plus there are worse things out there, like doing crack. Just sayin’.

    I weigh myself everyday and also don’t eat anything organic. I don’t have the money for it, plus how do we really know it’s organic?

    My other bad habit? Picking at zits. It’s so hard to resist and I hate them on my face!

  9. I dont think these are that bad! This is living your life and not being all crazy about rules! I mean maybe diet coke isnt the greatest thing ever but hey…what can you do. JK 🙂

    My could be perceived as bad habits to others:
    I drink coffee every single day of my life. Bad? Maybe. But it’s good to me and it’s good for everyone around me so they dont have to deal with a crazybitchfacelady at 7 am.
    Sometimes I am a lazy ass vegetarian and I’ll eat gardein and veggie burgers bc I dont want to prep anything else.
    I salt everything. Sometimes before I taste it. Apparently that’s rude? Who knew.

  10. So yea, I pretty much have every single one of those habits, too!!! Except the splenda thing, I used to use splenda all the time then read something about it being chlorine (I don’t know…I just immediately thought swimming pool and got freaked) so I quit splenda cold turkey. After reading that, I started thinking it tasted funny. Prior to that I would put splenda on popcorn (which is crazy good) and on toast w/ spray butter. Hello fake, not made from anything real, food obsession!!!

    I have developed a bad coffee thing lately. Stupid Keurig and that massive variety of k-cups. The other bad habit that comes to mind is picking at my eyelashes/mascara. Toward the end of the day, I’ll start picking at it and inevitably I lose an eyelash or two. Annoying.

  11. I think I can say yes to about everything you had there. And I would add that CARBS (potatoes, white bread, etc) are my friends. I have laid off all soda though. Usually just when we are out or I am desperate for caffeine. Its all about balance!

  13. I don’t eat organic. (My husband has brainwashed me into thinking that it’s a scam, plus I’m really cheap.)

    It’s not a healthy living bad habit, but I bite my nails. I’ve been able to quit here and there, but I always come back to it. Oh well.*

  15. Hahaha, I love the sodium cat! My bad habit is sweets and cheese. I love them both and pregnancy just makes me want them even more. I actually really miss Diet Coke, but there is no way that is good for a fetus and my mom’s lupus went in to remission when she gave up Nutra Sweet so I’m kind of afraid of the stuff. It tastes oh so good though!

  17. I am on board with all of those things–especially drinking–if they work for you. The only thing I absolutely cannot do is weigh myself daily or I get all crazy and obsessive and disordered. It sucks. But DC? Amazeballs. Splenda? Delicious. Drinking? Awesome. And the rest of it, too. I have wine pretty much every night. I crave it. I know I don’t have to have it . . . but maybe I do. Because it is delicious and makes me happy. Let the 12 step program begin.

  19. I work with some cavemen. About 2/3 of my coworkers right now drink to the point of getting hung over 5 nights a week, eat buffet for lunch every other day, don’t exercise, and smoke. On top of that, we’re all working overtime right now, so we’re sitting 10 to 12 hours a day. I know that Paleo blogs and Lupe Fiasco rag on Diet Coke, but – LOL – a little perspective, man. You’re right to love your bad habit.

    I LOVE Diet Coke – what is it about that stuff?! I have quit it many times and am now “off for good”, as I truly had no control and drank multiple cans per day (and I mean MULTIPLE). Now I have one Fresca a day and am fine with that – it doesn’t have the same hold on me as the DC did. It’s still crap for me, but at least I can stick to one. I allow myself DC on a few special occasions – which actually makes them more fun to look forward to than the occasion sometimes – my birthday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and any time I am on vacation (out of my area code). I know, psycho, right. I actually have to have rules.

  21. I do a lot of those too! Whew – I honestly feel a ton better. I’m crazy about weighing myself daily and I consume booze regularly as well.

  22. Well, as you know from my blog, I am quite the lush. I love my wine and my margaritas and my girlie cocktails and I will not be giving those up any time soon. I am also a coffee drinker, but of course I actually make it taste good. I load up on vanilla Carmel creamer and equal. I also can’t have chips anywhere near me because I will eat the whole bag without thinking twice. I only buy them when we have guests over now. Oh how I miss my cooler ranch doritos.

  24. I don’t wake up without coffee. Period. I skipped coffee yesterday because I was out of town for work and gave myself a migraine.

    To be honest, I’ve always mentally tabbed my calories. I don’t write them down or anything, but I keep a running tab throughout the day. I don’t think it’s a good or bad habit for me – it’s just a habit.

  26. Most healthy living bloggers are freaks of nature. (Said in the most loving sort of way of course 😉 ) The rest of us real people can have fun with our drinking, our calorie counting, and our daily dates with the scale. I am what I eat and I LOVE me some sugar cookies, white pasta, and gin&tonics. Power to the little people!!!

    Splenda is my lover, I put it in everything. Booze is one of my greatest comforts.

    love this post!
    i drink a LOT of coffee. i have a diet soda a day. i eat a lot of processed foods…frozen dinners, veggie burgers, sandwich thins, flavored yogurt, etc. i live by myself, and to make some gourmet dinner every night just aint happening. i cant stop w/ a spoon and peanut butter and/or icing. i love cool whip way too much.
