That Running Thing

Hey, I just remembered this is a running blog. So, let’s talk about that and how I’m not doing it.

First, nothing for Mother’s Day and now you’re rude?

It’s been two months since the “month of races.” Which means it’s been two months since I’ve done any significant running. If you’re new around these parts, I ran 2 marathons, 4 half marathons, a 10k, and a 5k within 5 months. Four of those races were in March, so I guess you can say a little burn out happened and is still happening.

Instead of running, I’m doing a lot of Crossfit, strength training, and spin, which I love. But I used to love running too. The thing is, I think about running all.the.time. And it pisses me off that I don’t want to do it.

During the one or two days a week that I don’t already have a workout planned, I try to psych myself up for running. THIS is going to be the night that I run and it’s going to be awesome and I’m going to love it all over again. But that doesn’t happen.

Tuesday was one of those nights. I went to the gym. I ran 6.2 miles at a 9:37 pace and…nothing. I mean, it felt good to sweat and be active of course but I didn’t love it and usually I do. So I think I need to be more active in getting my mojo back instead of waiting for it to come to me.

I posted a comment on the Fitfluential Running Facebook page to get some ideas and this girl gave me a good suggestion there. So I came up with this plan:

1. I’m going running with my group Saturday morning. I haven’t seen them in a long time and I miss them. I know it’s nothing crazy, but I think seeing my peeps will pep me up.

2. I’m going to sign up for my running group again this summer.

I wasn’t going to sign up this year and I still have no intention of running with them every week (or even every month) but I want the option to be there. I’m not training for anything, so if I don’t run with them much, at least the money is going to my local running store.

3. I’m going to sign up for a local 5k so I have a race to look forward to.

I don’t like 5ks. I don’t like them even more in the summer in Florida. But I do love speed work, so I can get my speed work on for fun and maybe bust out a PR on an actual timed course. I’m over PRing in 5ks that don’t have official timing.

So that’s the plan. We’ll see if it gets me out of my funk.

Yes. It’s over. You can come out now.

  1. Good plan. I have a hard time paying for a 5K–it’s only a 5K, right?!?–but if you were to run, say, a mile to warm up and a mile to cool down, then I guess it’s ok. (See previous discussion you and I had about this). Anywho, hope your mojo returns with its sassypants on!!!

Yeah, I didn’t say it was ideal. But we have 5ks or triathlons during the summer and I’m not ready to train for long distance again yet. But totes agree RE: previous discussion. There would be before/after miles.

Oh my gosh, this is soooo me! I can’t get motivated either without my Possum sitting in the driveway waiting for me to run with her. We used to have a 4 day a week schedule, and I sooo need that accountability. Because, dang, that couch and my happy little jar of Honey Peanut Butter look so much better than running.

    • Paula

You need to get her out of her funk so you guys can start racing again! I want to do the Space Coast half this year. I think it’s in November. Do it with me. 🙂

      • OMG are you kidding? lol What a coincidence! I seriously just asked you about this on my blog.

        • Paula

LOL! I was just commenting back when you wrote this. Do it with me! Except you’ll be way ahead of me BQing the full while I eat cookies waiting for you after I run the half.

I think running with a group is a good plan. It makes you accountable to someone i a way. I’m sure you and running will be back together in no time!

Is your bunny violating the Grinch in that photo, lol?

  4. I’m with you girl, I’ve been running a few times a week but I don’t get the same high I used to, I think it’s cause I have nothing to train for yet. I got so burned out w/ running I needed a break, so I’m taking one. I’m hoping I’ll get the urge to run again soon — you’re not alone!

    • Paula

It’s gotta come back eventually, right? At least we’re enjoying other things in the meantime. I think it’s not so much the not running that bothers me as much as losing my endurance does.

I was feeling the exact same way last summer. I kept trying to get psyched up for a run but overall, I had fallen out of love with running. I’ve used the time to focus on yoga and still do races, but running recreationally isn’t what it used to be for me. Over the months, I’ve come to enjoy it again, but I definitely think I overdid it for awhile and my body was telling me to take a break. Enjoy Cross Fit and spin! Our bodies are smart, smart things and know what we need. 🙂

    • Paula

Very true. Thanks, girl. And probably why I’m not getting too crazy with the commitment yet. Usually my race schedule is booked by now for the year and right now I’m only registered for one. I’m sure that will change. Maybe. 🙂

  6. I actually want to do the S

  7. I actually want to do the Space Coast Full:)

  8. You are singing my song. I want to want to run, but I just don’t. No motivation!*

    • Paula

Yeah, but you just had a million crazy awesome PRs, so you deserve a little break before you go back to being awesome again.

  9. You may remember my super funk at the end of last year. I found that when I tried to force it , it just pissed me off that much more.
Your mojo will come back and you’re doing the right things to try to help it. All the other work outs you are doing will make you a stronger runner so you are going to see big rewards when you do get back into it. That’s a bonus!
Also? Thank you for the Pants photos. I was having bunny withdrawals. She’s so cute! 😉

    • Paula

I was hoping this running break would somehow make me SUPER fast without actually doing speed work. It could happen! Right?

  10. Ha, I just blogged about the exact same thing. I just can’t get motivated to run no matter what I do. I feel like I am in some funk that I can’t shake, so frustrating!

  11. those are some really good plans! i really should make a plan… but oh well. i went on a run this morning and it sucked. i wasn’t happy and i just didn’t want to do it. but the thing is, i WANT to run!

    • Paula

Yes, me too! I want to run. But it’s just not happening. So maybe that means it will be super, crazy awesome when we actually do want to run again.

  12. Verlin

Maybe you’re not liking running as much because you are liking the challenge of Crossfit – fun to change it up a bit. And, that Pants is a bit of an exhibitionist, isn’t she?! Get a room.

    • Paula

That’s probably part of it. Something new is always fun.
And yes she is. Usually it’s before breakfast, that perv.

  13. Cooper didn’t get me a mothers day gift either – seriously?! After all I’ve done for you??? You can’t even get me some candy?! How rude Pants!

  14. Good luck with the plan! You should do a watermelon 5k! I’ve never done a race before, but I feel like if I did, there’d be a giant watermelon at the end.
