Rock Your BodyBugg

A little over a month ago, I bought a BodyBugg.

BodyBugg is a device attached to an armband that tracks the number of calories your body burns at any given time. The armband is worn on the back of your tricep. (Which means, contrary to popular belief, that is not a picture of my back.)

Before I say any more, it should be noted that I paid for the BodyBugg myself and am not getting any compensation for this post. I am not a cool enough blogger to get a BodyBugg for free. Or a Garmin Forerunner 10. What? Anyway, I’ve wanted to try one out for a long time but they were a little too expensive. So, when Michelle found one on sale online for $89.00, I grabbed it.

I wore the band for the first 24 hours just to track my resting/sleeping calorie burn, which averages between one and two calories a minute. As you can imagine, it made me love Breaking Bad even more when I realized that I burned about 90 calories while sitting on the couch watching it. Can Breaking Bad do any wrong? I’m thinking no.

There’s no way to read your calorie burn on the device itself, so you have to pop the Bodybugg out of the armband and hook it up to your computer by the USB cable that comes with it.

To get your calorie burn, you have to log into their Web site. When you log in for the first time, you have to register your device (which was a pain for me but their 24-hour service center was super helpful) and then enter your weight, age, sex, etc so it can accurately track your information.

The information from the Bodybugg syncs with the Web site and you can see your calories burned, and calories consumed if you log your daily food into their site (which I don’t because I use My FitnessPal instead). The site basically allows you to keep track of your entire exercise and nutrition plan, but I just use it to view specific calorie burn.

I wear the BodyBugg mainly for workouts. My main goal is to figure out which of my activities burn the most calories and I wanted to use something with more accuracy because cardio machines are notoriously off by about 20%. While a lot of the activities that I do averaged close to the amount of calories I predicted, there were a few surprises.

Remember that time I did Yoga? That hour and 15 minute session burned 174 calories, or what I like to call, “two Breaking Bad episodes.” The other day I wore my BodyBugg to Crossfit. We did the Filthy 50 workout and it took me 58 minutes to finish. My perceived exertion during that workout is extremely high. In other words, I feel like I’m going to die at any moment.

This is the workout, if you’re not familiar.

That workout burned 415 calories – about 150 short of my estimate.

I’ve worn the BodyBugg for several of those two-mile HIIT workouts I’ve been doing lately as well. Those runs burn about 325 calories in 20 minutes – about 75 calories more than I estimated. Pretty good for only 20 minutes of exercise.

So basically, I’ve been keeping a more accurate track of what I burn and have lost 5 lbs in the past three weeks. I’m not saying the Bodybugg is solely responsible for my weight loss because I’ve also been eating fairly well and doing two extra workouts a week (those HIIT 20-minute workouts), but I think it’s helped.

Overall, it’s made me more aware so that it’s easier to plan what I’m eating that day based on what workout I’ll be doing.

  1. This is super useful to know. I’ve been thinking of getting a Fit Bit, but I’m questioning how accurate it would be since it doesn’t have direct contact with your skin and heartbeat. I would *love* more accurate numbers for what I’m burning as I cling to the stairmaster. $89 is a score, too. Thanks for writing this!!

  2. Awesome! I won a FitBit Ultra in a Dr. Oz giveaway and was wearing it regularly in SC. But, with still not adjusting well to commuting, I don’t wear it all the time like I should. Goal for next week…oh wait…goal wear today and keep at it! LOL. It is sometimes surprising to see the results…are not quite what you felt they should be, or more than you thought! My FitBit does tell me on it how many calories, how many steps, how many stairs climbed, and my level of exertion. It is a pretty neat thing. The downside – it cannot get wet! Like seriously, I got a drop of water on it and the plastic coating started to peel away. That to me is a HUGE downside considering if wearing when working out – you sweat. Of course, they do give a lil clip to wear it in, which does help. Now…rain…that’s another story. I’ve meant to do a review of it on my blog, but again…I don’t blog as much, either. I’ll figure it all out and get back at! Maybe after Halloween! LoL. 🙂

I have wanted to try some sort of tracker to see the calories I am actually burning, but geez why do they have to be so expensive? I do want to know what I am burning, but I’d also like to afford food 😉

  4. Holy crap a BodyBug! I had one of those way back in 2006 (2007?) and used the hell out of it! It was about 3x the size and a horrific gray color but I lost about 20lbs. (Which I promptly gained back when I stopped using it.)

Do you still have to pay for the website access? There was a monthly fee when I had mine and that’s one of the reasons I stopped using it.

  5. It’s always interesting to see what your calorie burn for exercises are. I kind of want a heart rate monitor for that reason…but then I would probably forget to wear it!

    Have a great weekend!

ps- congrats on the 5lb loss!

Hmmm. I wonder how Body Bug compares to the Nike Fuel Band? I’ve seen people use both, but haven’t really looked into it enough to find out the differences. MOTHERBITCHES. I had actually never heard it before I found that comic! Haha. Now I’m going to have to use it more!

my free garmin forerunner 10 is crying on the inside. what?

  8. I’ve considered a BodyBugg more than once, but the monthly fee pissed me off. Since you said that’s gone, maybe it’s time to scrape together the cash. I would love to get one before I stop nursing so I can see how many extra calories I’m really burning right now.

I’m wondering if it would register what you burn when you’re nursing, only because the Bodybugg works off of heart rate. Does nursing raise your heart rate? I thought it just boosted metabolism so it’s a more behind-the-scenes calorie burn.

  9. This is so cool! Gadgets R Smart(er than I am).

  10. very interesting about the guess & check you did – a few of my coworkers got fitbits and they really like battling each other every week for “step-master”…. seems like the body bugg does way more though. it would be sweet if it wirelessly synced. (also, i like your comment about being a “cool enough blogger” – that’s the kind of funny honesty that made me click over to comment)

Man I want one of these so bad! 89 is a steal!!

  12. I seriously love my FitBit. It really makes me walk and I get all competitive to make that little flower grow. Not having a car has really increased my calories per day, but it also makes me hungry. Hopefully I can buckle down and lose a couple pounds by monitoring my caloric intake too.

  13. i had someone tell me about the BodyBugg but they hadn’t tried one, so thanks for sharing. i am always curious how accurate the calorie trackers are or if it’s more of the ‘mental’ tool with people. as in you’re made more conscious and aware of your input/output and are able to stick to ur goals better. either way CONGRATS on your weight-loss and keep up the great work!

  14. i’d love to try this body bug!

  15. A co-worker of mine has a BodyBug & loves it. I just got a Polar HR monitor & was eye-opened (no, I don’t think that’s really a thing) to actual calorie burn. I like your idea of wearing it during BB, sometimes I get heated when I watch that show, I wonder if my HR would reflect that!?!

  16. I love gadgets anyway and this gives some really useful information. Cool stuff!
