To DNS or not to DNS

That’s “Did Not Start” for you non-runners, or for those of you who would run a race no matter what.

I’ve been really sick since yesterday. It started with a nasty cough and now I feel super run down and fatigued. I’ve probably slept 70% of today. The thing is, I have a (potential PR) race tomorrow morning and I can’t decide if I should run it quasi-sick or just take the hit on the race entry fee.

I know what the smart thing to do is, but I’m not always smart. It kills me to not run it. I’ve been waiting for this race for months and the weather will be perfect (<— so rare for Florida). But sitting on the couch isn’t even comfortable, I’m not sure how running 13 miles will be.

I guess I’ll see how I feel in the morning. What would you do?

  2. Do it. You know yourself. You’ll be pissed at yourself if you don’t. It might suck, but if you don’t try, you’ll always wonder. If it were me, I would skip it, though. So there’s that.

  3. Ah that sucks that you came down with a cold 😦 I guess it depends on how much you care about the money and if you are okay with possibly not getting your PR (because of your cold). You could always get everything ready and if you sleep terribly tonight and feel like absolute shit tomorrow morning, then don’t do it.

      I ran the safari park 1/2 marathon in San Diego almost two years ago with the flu. I had taken my son with me to run it as his 15th birthday gift and it was an inaugural race I was so excited to run. The morning of I was so sick so I planned to just spectate and cheer my boy on. As I got caught up in the excitement of race morning I changed my mind and decided to do it but while taking it easy. I fell in the gravel and mile 6, and ran with blood running down my leg until the next aid station at mile 8, but I finished, and stronger than I anticipated. I was down for the count for a week after that but I don’t regret it for a second. Go for it!!

  4. That’s tough. I did my 10K while feeling like death, but that’s much shorter and I walked a lot of it. I hope you feel better in the morning!

    Unless you are feeling sick to your stomach or really otherwise horrific tomorrow, I’d go for it – you’ll be pissed at yourself if you don’t. Either way, cut yourself some slack and enjoy whatever you decide.

  7. If I’m not in some kind of pain (leg pain, chest pain, headache, any pain) I’ll run on race day. But that’s not the smartest thing to do. I’m curious to see if you ran!*

  8. I would run it for sure. But maybe that’s just because I’m cheap and don’t like to throw away the registration fee. Eek.

  9. Before I begin, let me just express my disappointment for Orlando weather last week. My wife, and I came down for some Disney from Ohio, and it was often not too much better than we are used to. I was hoping for some time by our resort pool… At least it was good for running.

    As for your race, I guess it would depend on your kind of sickness. I have often trained with head colds, but I would never consider it with the flu. Then again, I sign up for races because they cost money, and that face motivates me to do well and to show up. This is a tough choice. I would probably be there because I am a loon.
