Five for Friday

1. I went for a run last night. This was my view.

That means my run was not on my beloved treadmill, but outside in the land of gnat clouds. The temperature was in the low 60s (that’s our cool front) when I started and everyone on the path was already in winter jackets and long sleeves. Florida is hilarious when it dips below 72F. There is no reason for any of us to own a quilted winter jacket.

2. I ran five miles. I didn’t feel omgamazing but I felt alright and this is how it went.

I know it’s only five miles (no walking! hive five), but I couldn’t even get one mile like that during my race. Apparently I’m not meant to run races but boring mile loops around a lake.

3. I got my first Christmas card in the mail. (From this girl who just changed her blog name. You know you’re gonna have to change that again in 10 years right?)

There are several things I like about how this was addressed. Probably the first being that all our last names are Hamm. There’s something delightful and disgusting about the name Pants Hamm.

4. Last weekend, we went to see Steve Byrne at the Improv with a bunch of friends and got to meet him after the show.

He’s on a show called Sullivan and Son on TBS that we don’t watch, so we had no idea who he was but we had a good time and Steve was a nice guy. Some of his routine was a little too offensive for me (and I am really hard to offend) but other than that, worth seeing.

5. Hubs and I watched Winter’s Bone last night.

Yeah, I know it’s old. I have a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, I bought the movie on super sale and have been meaning to watch it for awhile now.

I’m going to sum it up quickly so you don’t have to watch it.

*Spoiler Alert*

*You’ll thank me later*

Jennifer Lawrence is dirt poor and raises her two younger siblings because her mom is crazy and her dad’s in jail for cooking meth. Dad jumps bail and disappears “mysteriously.” (It’s not really mysterious.) The dad’s debt threatens to take the family house so she has to find him. She walks from house to house asking people where her dad is while wearing a sweet deer sweater.

Alright, so that happens for about an hour. Oh, and it’s cold out. I guess that’s why it’s called Winter’s Bone because there’s no other explanation. Although, no one ever seems really cold in the movie so I question the temperature.

Anyway, after asking enough people, she finds her dad. He’s dead in the water (literally) and she has to chop his hands off to prove it (best not to ask).  Finally, she gets to keep the house. Then she makes her siblings feel like crap unintentionally.

The end.

When I say nothing really happened in this movie, I am not exagerrating. However, this is what is written on the back of the box.

Hubs mentioned that we did technically have pulses during the movie. So they got us there.

Five for Friday

I’m going to talk about boobs some more. You are not safe yet. You may never be safe actually. Think of this as a nice break from race season poop talk.

1.  One of the things I was dreading most about the new ladies is that I knew I would have to sleep on my back for the six weeks of recovery. I’m a 100% all the time stomach sleeper. I never sleep another way. Not on my back. Not on my side. Just, no. Let me say how miserable sleeping is now. My second favorite thing in the world (the first being eating) has been ruined. I’ve never been so uncomfortable. Couple that with some insomnia last night and I was doing dishes and laundry at 4:45 in the morning.

After the first week of recovery, I was released to sleep on my side. Sleeping on my side is fine for an hour until I wake up thinking I’m having a stroke because my shoulder down to my hand and upper right side of my torso is numb. How the hell do people sleep on their side? I have no idea. So every night, I toss and turn (without the turning part) until I finally fall asleep only to wake up shortly after because I’m so uncomfortable.

2.  I finished Deadwood (loved it) and now I’m catching up on season 2 of House of Lies.

I’m loving it even more than last season and not just because my lovah, Kristen Bell, is in it. I feel like the things that annoyed me about the first part of season 1 are gone and the story is getting even better. Season 2 is worth it just for the Matt Damon episode alone. Also, it helps that KB looks exceptionally smokin’ this season.

3. I started Orange is the new Black yesterday on Netflix.

I’ve been really looking forward to this one because it’s from Jenji Kohan, who created Weeds, and I looove Weeds. So far I’m two episodes in and I’m really liking it. I asked hubs if he wanted to watch this one with me and he told me to go ahead and watch it on my own. Then, he ended up watching the second episode with me and declared that I could no longer watch it without him. So, that says something. Also, I’m secretly super excited when I can get him to watch new shows because he almost always says no.

4. I’m back at Crossfit three times a week and on Wednesday, I used my arms for the first time in a month (still no chest exercises for two weeks, though).

**How to do: lateral raises, leg lifts.**

I’m not able to lift over 10lbs right now, so I used 5lb dumb bells for the lateral raises and 10lbs for the bicep curls. I was seriously wiped out after this workout. Hubs went on to do a 5th set while I just watched. Today, I’m sore. Everywhere. Do not underestimate light weight and high reps, my friends. I’m supposed to go to Crossfit tonight but I’m not sure what’s left to work out on me that isn’t already in pain.

5. Remember that work trip to Maryland that I was supposed to go on? Well, that was cancelled. Guess where I’m going instead?

It’s like Texas doesn’t want to let me go. I’m leaving Sunday and I’ll be there for (wait for it) another two weeks. At least I’ll be reunited with Whataburger, Freebirds, Chedddars, and this girl once again. I’ll also be reunited with 107 degree temperatures. Not as excited about that part.

Have a great weekend and I’ll talk to you all next week from Killeen.

Five for Friday. Ok, It's Six.

1. I am currently on Day 5 of good eating. That means Day 5 of lower carb. Day 5 with minimal desserts. And more importantly, Day 5 without peanut butter. I have an unopened jar at home that I find myself gazing at longingly a couple times a day. Also, now that I’m peanut butter free, I’ve realized that I don’t really like Saltine crackers and bananas. They were just a means to transport more peanut butter into my mouth. I’m looking forward to the day when I can just spoon it all in again.

2. Speaking of eating lower carb, it is making my Crossfit workouts so much harder. I am just dying during them. The workouts don’t have new moves or anything like that and I usually get tired, but just not this tired. I’m sure I’ll get used to the lower carb thing at some point and start busting out workouts like it ain’t no thang.

That’s usually how I look by the way. Just like that.

3. I haven’t been running much. Still. I might get in about three miles a week, and that’s not even consecutive miles. This week, I thought I would get back at it. So, last night I did a speed run. I warmed up for .60 miles and then did this x8.

  • 1 minute @ 8:00
  • 2 minutes @ 10:00

I went to the gym with the intention of doing 10 repeats. Guess who’s endurance is shot? THIS girl. I could barely get through 6 and 7. Very humbling and sucky experience. I’m going to have to change my treadmill approach.

4. Work is sending me to Killeen, TX again. For three weeks. Three! I’m not even sure how one packs for three weeks but I’m fairly certain I should just put my house on wheels and roll it there.

5. Hubs and I think Pants has a ghost petter.

See those lines in her fur where it looks like someone scratched her back? At first we thought it was from her squeezing in and out of her box. But those lines are there all.the.time. We’ll even mess up her hair so it stands straight up and it will go right back to looking like that. See? Ghost petter.

6. Go check out this post about yours truly. I giggled reading the whole thing. I even made the blog title! Plus, she is much better at recapping events than I am and has much better pictures.

Five for Friday

First of all, thank you all so much for your comments on yesterday’s post. I mean, seriously. They were all so helpful to me and you are all amazing. ❤ I will be sure to keep you all updated once I decide on the future of my boobs.

Ok, now let’s get to some random stuff.

1. Michelle posted a link to a Greek Yogurt Pancake recipe last week. I noticed they had three ingredients (my main qualification for a recipe – it’s gotta be dumb enough for me) so I decided I had to try them.

Michelle says she’s addicted to them, but it’s all lies! I am the one with the problem. I have eaten them for breakfast EIGHT days in a row. She’s only eaten them twice. Who’s addicted now, Michelle? Hmm?

  • 6oz cup of Plain Chobani
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of flour  (you could use 1/2 cup for a less yogurt taste if you’re into that)

I add a little water because the batter is so thick. I also add cinnamon, vanilla liquid Stevia, and blueberries because I like ’em sweet. It makes 3 big pancakes or 6 smaller ones that keep me full all morning. The whole thing is 270 calories and 27 g of protein. Yes, please.

Updated to add: Use a little baking soda if you don’t use self-rising flour. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

2.  I’m four days into my week and a half of rest from working out and good lord, I cannot figure out what to do with myself. That’s how much time working out takes from my life. I’m now bored.

3. I saw Warm Bodies last night.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. So dumb. It was cute but just…so dumb. The main girl, Teresa Palmer, reminded me so much of Kristen Stewart – facial expressions and all – that I thought they could be sisters. Then I was looking online and found I’m not the only one. The girls have comparison photos all over the interwebz.

Which reminds me, I also saw Side Effects a couple weeks ago. Hubs hated it and thought it was “contrived and boring.” I thought it was decent, but definitely a renter. I guess it was supposed to be full of twists that you didn’t see coming, but I didn’t find any of the twists all that surprising.

Has anyone seen Beautiful Creatures yet? The effects in the trailer look so cheesy that I can’t decide if I should see it.

4. I was looking at some old pictures of Pants. I think she liked her first chin so much that she got another one.

5. I’m heading to Tampa tomorrow for the Gasparilla Half Marathon. The race is on Sunday and it’s gonna be a hot one. Not amused, Florida. Not amused.

The race won’t be so bad if it actually rains. Plus, it’s supposed to be mid-80’s in Orlando so at least Tampa is a few degrees cooler. But not cool enough that I won’t still bitch about it.

Five for Friday (Texas Edition)

I’m only here in Killeen for one more day and I can’t wait to get home. I miss my hubs and my bunny. I need to see that sweet bunny butt again.

I’m also in desperate need of a long run. I haven’t run longer than 5 miles in a month and I have some races coming up that I’d like to actually be prepared for. I’m also considering signing up for a race in January (ahem) so I need to keep my endurance up. If I don’t run with my group next weekend, it might get ugly.

So here’s what you’ve been missing in Killeen because I’m too busy blabbing about how much I love Austin:

1.  It’s burning hot outside but any establishment has the A/C jacked so high (low?) that I’m either hotter than hell or freezing my ass off. The classroom I work in happens to be of the freezing variety. I threw a jacket in my suitcase just in case, and I’ve worn it every single day. I didn’t try the jacket on before I packed it, so let’s just say it’s a size too small. And my arms only lift half way up.

2.  Yesterday, a bunch of us went to lunch at noon. I thought it was kinda chilly outside, which I found super weird. I checked the temperature on my weather app and it was 92 degrees with a “feels like” temperature of 98.  Ninety-eight is my new cold. It only took two weeks in Texas for this to happen. I might have to bring out the ear muffs if it gets down to 80.

3.  I’m working in a classroom on a military base and the badge I wear requires an escort. That means, I can’t go anywhere in the building without someone who has a no escort required badge. So, I have to ask random dudes (with the correct badge) anytime I want to go to the bathroom. And then they have to wait outside the bathroom door for me to finish so they can walk me back. That’s fun.

So I’ve basically been living on Diet Coke and barely drinking water so I’m not running to the bathroom every 30 minutes. And I’m worried that I’ll take more than 2 minutes in there and they’ll know what I’m doing.

4. The other day, one of the ladies that hands out badges when we enter the building asked me if I thought it was hot enough outside. I told her I could go for it being 110 instead of 104, and that it wasn’t quite hot enough. And then she was all…

Texas has not taken kindly to my weather jokes.

5.  The hotel doesn’t get the AMC channel, so I’m two weeks behind on Breaking Bad. It’s killing me! The internet connection at the hotel is so slow that it’s too annoying to watch through my SlingBox, so I have to wait till I get home. They do have HBO, which may not be a good thing. I’ve managed to see In Time again (< — click that if you haven’t seen it – it’s a public service warning), part of Something Borrowed (ugh),  the same episode of Newsroom four times, and some movie with Chris Evans where he’s naked a lot.

Ok, that last part isn’t so bad.

This pretty much sums up my last two weeks in Killeen. Exciting, right? Next time I talk to you, I’ll be back in Orlando. I’m so ready to be home. Have a great weekend!

Five for Friday

This week has been busy and I have a busy weekend ahead of me but it should be fun. This is what has been going on in the meantime.

1. With all the Breaking Bad watching recently, the DVR has been neglected. We have 7 weeks of House and Once Upon a Time episodes just sitting there. So, we’re taking it one at a time and finally finished House last night. I gotta say, I’m kinda disappointed with the final episode. Not because of how it ended but because 45 minutes of the show was just a dumb reason to bring back all the characters from previous seasons. I don’t want to see Amber anymore. I didn’t like her to begin with. And while I liked Cameron, there was no Cameron/Chase interaction which sucked. And it was super obvious that Cuddy wasn’t in that group. So, meh to the final episode. But it’s definitely a show that remained consistently good all 8 seasons. Plus, the show has my Australian back-up husband (in case the others don’t work out).

Hello Jesse Spencer. Seriously. Look at those teeth. That is the first thing I look for in a man.

2. Breaking Bad season 5 starts July 15.

3. I’m going out of town this weekend, so hubs is setting up the slingbox for me. For those of you not addicted to TV, a slingbox allows you to watch shows off your DVR anywhere from any computer or mobile device. So just because I’m going out of town doesn’t mean I need to leave my sweet security blanket behind.

4. I’m doing awesome with my eating and work out plan this week. Like, awesome enough that I think THIS is the time that it will stick. Not only that but I’ve had 2 diet cokes so far, which is down to one every other day or so. It figures that this is a holiday weekend and I’ll be out of town (i.e. out of my eating comfort zone). That means, if you see me tweet or Facebook about cupcakes or cookies or fried things or buffets, it is your duty to tweet/Facebook me back damage control.

5. I’m switching projects at work. I don’t love the idea (because I really liked the project I was on) but the contract extension hasn’t been signed with the client yet so it was either that or potentially no job at all. This new project isn’t a short term thing either. So I’m happy they like me enough to place me somewhere else and I’m worried whether I’ll like it or not because I have been on my share of crappy projects.

Alright, that’s all I have for today. Hope you all have a safe holiday weekend. Now, I need to finish packing and probably take a shower since hubs just told me I smell.

Five for Friday

I like lists. I’m a technical writer. We number everything. So time to get my list on. (Oh, and if you didn’t enter my giveaway already, go do that.)

1.  I wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions on Facebook and Twitter of what to do with my spaghetti squash. Surprisingly, one of the suggestions was not to “shove it,” so I appreciate that. To say I’m an idiot in the kitchen would be an understatement. I realized this when I figured out my favorite way to eat spaghetti squash is with marinara sauce, shredded cheese, and salt/pepper/oregano – also known as the most basic way to make spaghetti. Brilliant. I also like it better reheated the next day than just out of the oven. Speaking of the oven, to make spaghetti squash I had to use it.

Oh, and I just wanted to mention that this girl saved me about 3 fingers when she suggested that I heat it up in the microwave for 4 minutes before I cut it. So thank you for my fingers. I plan to keep doing wonderful things with them.

2.  I guess Fergie has a new beverage out called Voli Light Vodka. I’m all for light vodka because that just means you get to drink more of it, right? Right. Anyway, I ran across this picture of her out promoting it.

Unless it’s Halloween or you’re going to a party where you’ll be ripping beating hearts out of chest cavities, I don’t think those are necessary. And there are so many daily things that could become uncomfortable because of those. Like, picking other people’s noses.

3. Last Friday, I found out my project manager at work was on vacation from his out of office message. High communication right there. And while I’m talking about work, we changed insurance providers this year which we seem to do every few years to keep the costs lower for all the employees. Well, I went to get my prescription and it’s $13 more than with our old insurance and $8 more than if I didn’t use my insurance at all. I hope I don’t die anytime soon, because that’s not in the budget this year.

5. I’m still super obsessed with Walking Dead memes.

And now it’s time to go enjoy my “Hunger Games” vacation day. I’ll be picking up my and Michelle‘s (me and Michelle’s?) packets for our race on Saturday (official last race of the season), possibly getting a new pair of running shoes (Saucony Cortanas), seeing the movie (finally), and taking the iPhone plunge.

I always said I would never get an iPhone since I’m fairly anti-Apple. Today, I will eat my words. I hope they taste like cupcakes.

Five for Friday

It’s time for another Five for Friday. It’s a random one, but then again, when am I not?

1. Three years ago today, this old thing happened.

Our anniversary just happens to fall on our every other Friday off work schedule, so we’ve celebrated so far by doing the dishes and cleaning the pool. Tonight, we might even even enjoy a carb with dinner. We get pretty crazy after three years. Or 10. Nothing like a wedding to reset that dating anniversary and wipe out 7 years of hard labor.

2.  Right now, hubs is off getting his hair done. Presumably to look pretty for me for our anniversary and keep up with my lifetime of hair color changes.

Incidentally, that last picture is the look he gets on his face when I talk about running.

3. Race weekend month is here! Tomorrow, Michelle and I leave for Tampa to run the Gasparilla Half Marathon on Sunday. It’s my favorite half marathon of the 11 I’ve done and the first one I deemed worthy of repeating, even with the guy slapping people’s asses at the turn around last year (<—-race review link). I haven’t used my Camelback in a long time but I think it’s time to bust it out again. I’m not sure how I’ll do, so right now I’m just hoping to beat last years time (2:16:55) which I really hope is possible since that time included 2 “special deliveries.”  Then again, I haven’t run a half faster than 2:18 in a year, so who knows what will happen out there.

4. I ran a few times this week in my new Mizuno Wave Riders. Once with the Superfeet inserts and once without. I don’t think those inserts work for me because everything felt much more normal without them. Now the shoes seem a little narrow and rub my feet the wrong way. So these aren’t the right shoes for me either. EFF.

What should I do? Pad up my feetsies with double socks and band-aids and run in my new shoes this weekend, or run in my old shoes that possibly have too many miles (350) on them already and could be the cause of calf pain?

5.  If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you already know that little ole me was featured in Fitness Magazine’s “Fit Bloggers We Love.” Go check out the article. It totally makes me feel like a celebrity.

I’ve already informed Michelle that I will need her to turn down my bed and put a mint on my pillow this weekend. I think I also want her to announce my name Price-is-Right style as I walk into any new room. I don’t think I’m asking too much.

Five for Friday

1.  I’ve been getting an unusual amount of requests (that is, more than zero) to make American Horror Story recaps a regular thing on the blog. Who me? Talk about TV more? Why I couldn’t.

 Oh right. Yes I could.

 2.  Last night’s workout was a speed run at the gym:

Mile Pace Incline
1 10:00 warm up 1
1200 (3/4 mile) 8:34 1
200 Walking 1
Repeat x4

Total miles: 4.00

That run was hard and I wanted to slow down the last quarter mile or more of each 1200. I could barely maintain the 8:34 pace. But all I could think about was how I didn’t want to show a speed decrease on the blog. So there you have it. I almost died so I wouldn’t look like a total ass to you all.

3.  Go wish this girl good luck in Chicago. She’s running her first marathon this weekend and she’s more nervous than Lindsay Lohan at a DUI check point.

4.  Remember how I told you my hubs loves hula hooping?

You can check him out in action! (That’s a Youtube link.) We went to a bar we really like (that’s also a concert venue) and it was totally empty, so he practiced on the dance floor. 🙂

5.  I bought my Betta fish, Max, (get it? Betta Max?) a $3 leaf hammock.

Who knew there was a business out there directed at making fish more lazy? Sometimes I put a fake bamboo plant in Max’s bowl and he actually rests a fin on it and chills out. So, this leaf seemed like it would allow him to be lazy but take up less bowl space so he could swim around more. This is what my life has been reduced to: trying to make a fish more comfortable. I was getting mad because he wasn’t using the leaf and it’s not like you can discipline fish or explain to them that $3 is really expensive for a leaf. Well, he finally used it! Not even food pellets moved his lazy ass off that thing.

A face not even a mother could love.

Five for Friday – Lame Confessions

Workout: Ran 2.1 miles on treadmill (9:41 pace), walked .6 miles

I woke up before my alarm this morning so I decided to get a couple miles in on the treadmill instead of going back to sleep. This is amazing for two reasons: 1) I don’t do mornings and 2) our A/C stopped working last night and the house was hot. I kept it at a 9:41 pace and didn’t push it because the run felt really good! I even planned on doing 2.5 miles at first, but I didn’t want to loathe the last .4 so I stopped while my “running happy” was in full force.

Junk miles Leisure runs = SO nice.

Rewind to last night. When we realized the A/C wasn’t working, hubs and I checked out the A/C unit and found that the air filter had frozen to a block of ice. (He couldn’t get it out it was so frozen.)

I’m pretty sure this is all my fault because I put the A/C up when I leave for work and down when I get home, so with all the humidity lately I’m sure the A/C had to work overtime to cool the house and just pooped out.

We turned the A/C off last night, the filter was thawed this morning, and seemed to work again once we turned it back on. *whew*  $5000 dollar crisis averted.

I’m going to take a cue from my girl Michelle and write a Five for Friday. Five (lame) confessions, that is. So, let’s get to it.

1.  I watched Monday’s episode of Chuck last night on the DVR – and I cried at the end.

I cry at EVERYTHING. It’s ridiculous. And the hubs calls me out all.the.time. Annoying! I’m gonna call him out everytime he loses a match playing Street Fighter and see if he likes it.

2.  While I’m at it, I cried at the end of this week’s episode of House too, which wasn’t even sad. I’m just that much of a wuss.

3.  I didn’t do anything to my hair today. And it looks like hell (unless you apply 3 photo effects like I did).

I love choppy hair cuts but I think my cut is too choppy. One indicator of a good haircut is that it looks good unstyled. I just look like a fluff ball. I’m hoping that will work itself out when it grows out an inch.

4.  Today at work someone told me they liked my belt.  Then added, “I had one like that in high school.”

Is that still a compliment?

“Hey, I love your haircut! I had one like that in high school!”

5. I’m wearing the same jeans today that I wore on Wednesday…and I didn’t wash them.

Random picture of my bunny time! She says Happy Easter!

Alright, now someone please make this work day go faster. I’m seeing Ke$ha tonight at House of Blues and I am freakin’ psyched! Expect a Ke$ha filled post this weekend. And expect drunk Tweets tonight. And maybe some pictures of the day on Facebook that won’t make the blog that might be embarrasing.

I hope you all respect me in the morning.

What’s you lame confession today?

How many times do you wear your jeans before you wash them? (If there isn’t a noticeable stain, I can wear jeans 4 or 5 times without washing them. Can I sit on your lap?)
